The Rupee Makeover

It appears the Indian Rupee is set to get a makeover.  Of course, the more pragmatic side of us would say it isn't really necessary to do this; it probably wouldn't make too much of a difference.  But the patriotic side of us can't resist this move; it seems like a new beginning, showcasing our uniqueness to the rest of the world.

If the media is to be believed, we will soon be symbolizing our currency in the format shown below:

The following features seem to recommend it:
  • It is a cross between the Roman numeral R without the spine and the Ra of the Devanagari script.
  • The two parallel lines are said to represent the "equal to" sign, thus denoting balance.
  • The two parallel lines are also apparently symbolic of the Indian flag, with the middle vertical line denoting the chakra (if you stretch your imagination a bit).
In my opinion it is very elegant and appropriate.  One can easily dash this down on paper with a flourish of the pen.  Great job, Udaya Kumar!
